ABOUT LUKE WOOD
Luke is currently works as a Fire Fighter on Hamilton Island.
Here's a little background information from Luke...
At age 17 I decided to join the Australian Army. Both my parents and my sister were in the Army so I guess it was was natural for me wanting to follow their career paths.
So, in 2005 I decided to join the Infantry Corp. During my 8 months of employment training I preformed extremely well in both Military Fitness and Shooting. I was awarded with skill at arms ( best shooter in my platoon ) which gave me the preference to which Infantry Battalion I wanted to be station at. I selected to be signed as a Paratrooper.
I was posted to 3RAR ( 3rd Royal Australian Regiment ) in Sydney, where I would be the youngest soldier in my Battalion. Shortly after my 18th birthday I was deployed to the Solomon Islands for 2months on a peace keeping mission. Not long after returning back to Australia I commenced deployment training for my company's 6.5month deployment to Iraq, where I would serve as the youngest Australian Soldier on my deployment. I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into. One thing I knew was that my mates and I were very well trained to handle what ever challenges we faced! We all deployed together and returned home together! This was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life!
In 2008 I deployed to East Timor for 4 months, this was a different operation to Iraq. However it still had its challenges.
In 2009 I decided to leave the military and I pursued a career path as a Prison Officer in Victoria's Maximum Security Prison. Again I was the youngest Prison Officer working at the Prison. I didn't see this as a challenge as it was what I was use to. Over the next 2 years I would manage Australia's most notorious and dangerous Prisoners. These challenges and experiences were different to the ones I faced in the Military.
After 2 years working in the prison I decided for another career change. Something that I have always wanted to do ever since I was a kid. Become a Firefighter! The process was long and very competitive. However my persistence paid off. Being a full time Firefighter has opened up more doors than I ever imagined. I am also a volunteer Firefighter helping protect the town my wife and I live in.
One of my proudest achievements is being the cover of the Victorian / Australian Firefighters Calendar. I have been involved with the Calendar for 4 years now. The Australian Firefighters Calendar is the biggest selling calendar in the world. This year we will raise $600,000 for the Royal Children's Hospital, helping sick children. $100,000 for Mates 4 Mates, an organization that helps soldiers and their family's that suffer from PTSD, and $100,000 to the RSPCA, a charity that helps protect cruelty to animals and helps them find a home.
Over the years I have been very busy working hard. One thing I have always made a conscious effort to do is make time for my Family! Family is everything!
Oh and another thing, people often say that they are too busy to go to the gym and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You're never too busy! Some times you just have to learn how to sleep faster! :)
